That’s how big and popular they are in the hosting world.
They host more than 2 million websites and have a global staff of over 750 employees. Bluehost is one of the most recognised names in the business.
Bluehost is based in Utah, US and is owned by EIG, who also own Hostgator. Bluehost has a reputation for offering good hosting plans for excellent prices.

- Free WordPress Migration Tool – Moving your WordPress site to SiteGround is actually painless and free with their dedicated migration plugin. I used it multiple times and was pretty impressed with how easy it was – even for beginners. If you’re uncomfortable doing it yourself, you can also have the SiteGround team assist you for $30.
- Handles Large Volumes Of Traffic – For a budget hosting provider, I was impressed with how much traffic SiteGround could handle. I sent 500 visitors at the same time, and the website kept running seamlessly. It performed significantly better than Bluehost in this test.
- Global Server Network – SiteGround has 11 data centres worldwide, spread out across the US, Europe, Australia and Asia. That means your site should load fast, no matter where your visitors come from. Perfect for a website with a global audience.
- Comprehensive Backup System – SiteGround automatically backs up your site data daily and keeps a record of all backups for 30 days. But what really impressed me is the on-demand backup features in their GrowBig and GoGeek plans.
- Seriously Fast Support – This blew my mind! I contacted SiteGround on multiple occasions and was connected with a support assistant in under 30 seconds each time via live chat. The support team was also super-knowledgable and genuinely seemed like they wanted to help.
- Advanced WordPress Updates – Another feature I like about SiteGround is the ability to choose when to update WordPress. For example, you can set minor updates to happen automatically while requiring manual approval for major updates. It’s a small feature, but it really shows they understand WordPress users.
- Built-In Performance Optimisation – SiteGround comes with some impressive performance features. My favourite is the native caching system, which works very well. I was impressed with the level of performance that SiteGround offers, especially considering its affordability.
📋 SiteGround Cons: What I Think You’ll Dislike
- Higher Pricing – Compared to Bluehost, SiteGround is slightly more expensive. While the entry plans are similar, the difference in price comes in the higher-tier, cloud-based hosting plans. I don’t think this will be a major issue for most users. Just something to keep in mind.
- Storage Limitations – Even on the higher-tiered shared hosting plans, SiteGround has strict storage limitations. This won’t affect small business sites or blogs, but larger sites need to be aware of the limitations before choosing a paid plan.
- Paid Malware Protection – I don’t like it when hosting providers charge for malware protection and removal. SiteGround offers the scanning for free, but removal is a paid monthly add-on. In my opinion, this should be included, especially in the higher-tier plans.
- Limited Plan Selection – Compared to Bluehost, SiteGround has fewer plans overall. They aren’t as customisable, and the pricing jump from shared hosting to dedicated hosting is massive. They lack intermediate plans for medium-sized websites.

📋 Bluehost Pros: What I Think You’ll Like
- Affordable Pricing – Bluhost offers some of the most affordable pricing on the market. That’s a big reason they have become so popular. Prices start at just $2.95/month on their entry-level shared hosting plan.
- Higher Storage Limits – This is another area where Bluehost shines. They offer much higher storage limits (up to 100GB), perfect for larger sites or websites with lots of media. If you run a large business, this might save you a lot of money in the long run.
- Free Domain Included – For the first year, Bluehost offers a free domain. There are some exclusions, but it’s a nice benefit to have and makes setting up your site even more seamless.
- Multiple Plan Options – Another area where Bluehost earns points is the number of hosting plans it offers. The shared hosting offers five quality plans (3 normal, 3 ecommerce) with different prices. But you also get several other options for different hosting types, including VPS, dedicated and Cloud. Depending on the type of site you have and how it grows, Bluehost gives you more options long-term.
- Multi-Channel Support – Bluehost offers 24/7 support through live chat, phone and email. Having phone support is always such a big plus, just in case something major happens and you need help quickly. In my experience, speaking on the phone often leads to faster results than typing back and forth on a keyboard.
- Built-In Performance Features – Like SiteGround, Bluehost includes built-in caching and some other speed optimisation plugins. They aren’t as powerful, but they will definitely boost your site’s page speed.
📋 Bluehost Cons: What I Think You’ll Dislike
- Restricted Free Migrations – This particular con is a big one. While Bluehost advertises free migrations, the truth is that it’s more complicated than that. You must have purchased your plan in the last 30 days, and your website must meet their “website qualifications”. If it doesn’t, you’re on the hook for a steep $149.99 fee.
- Performance Issues Under Heavy Traffic – In my load test of 500 visitors at the same time, Bluehost really struggled. The site was obviously affected, which is a big concern if you run a large marketing campaign or suddenly go viral.
- Limited Server Locations – Bluehost has 5 server locations worldwide (which isn’t clearly disclosed), and means they can’t offer the same performance as SiteGround. This is particularly important if you run a global site with visitors from all over the world, like me.
- Backup Limitations – Basic backups are not included in all Bluehost plans. That means you will need to pay an additional $1.99/month to have them included. It is essential that you have some kind of backup system in place.
- Longer Wait Times For Support – When I contacted Bluehost, I found their wait times for live chat to be between 2-4 minutes. The agents also take a lot longer to respond to each message, which honestly, becomes quite frustrating. It feels like they are handling multiple requests at once, which ultimately causes longer wait times.
SiteGround vs Bluehost: Top Features
Both SiteGround and Bluehost offer great functionality as web hosting companies.
But what separates them is the small differences within the features themselves. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Migration
What is website migration? It’s simply the act of transferring your site from one hosting company to another.
Without good migration features, it is a long, difficult and strenuous process.
SiteGround
SiteGround offers free website migration for WordPress users.
They have a dedicated plugin that makes the process easy and painless. All you need to do is install the plugin and generate an access token to start the migration process.
If you don’t have a WordPress site or would prefer a professional to do it, the SiteGround team will do a custom migration for only $30.
Bluehost
Bluehost also offers free website migration but theirs does come with some interesting T&Cs to consider.
You must have:
- Purchased a new hosting in the last 30 days
- Host your website on WordPress
- Meet the right website qualifications

You will pay $149.99. This does include up to 1 websites and 20 email accounts.
2. Storage Space
Storage is always an essential feature to consider. Especially if you have a larger site with lots of pages.
You need a hosting plan that gives you enough storage for your site now and gives you the ability to increase storage as your site grows.

Bluehost and SiteGround both offer SSD storage on all their hosting plans. These are much faster than traditional hard drives.

Bluehost offers much better value for money when it comes to storage.
It’s worth noting – 10GB of storage will be enough for most sites unless you plan to upload HD images and heavy 4k videos.
3. Bandwidth
Websites need to handle the traffic they get if they ever want to get big.
Bandwidth refers to the amount of traffic that your website can have at one time. If you have an affiliate site or blog, you must have enough bandwidth to handle all of the traffic that you are getting.
If you don’t? Your website page load speeds will suffer and your website could crash.

Both Bluehost and SiteGround offer unlimited bandwidth on all of their plans – so go get as much traffic to your site as you can.
But there’s something you need to know about bandwidth.
There is something called load impact which measures how your hosting performs under stress. In my individual website load testing SiteGround performed very well while Bluehost couldn’t get through the test.
This is a critical win for SiteGround.
4. Domains & Subdomains
Need to create different subdomains for different aspects of your site?
A subdomain is a different part of your main domain. For example – cart.yourdomain.com is a subdomain of the main domain specifically used to host the shopping cart.
SiteGround
SiteGround offers unlimited subdomains across all of its hosting plans. When you purchase a plan, you also receive a free domain for the first year.
Bluehost
Bluehost has a limitation of 25 subdomains on their Basic plan and offers unlimited subdomains on all of the others.
They do include a free domain name for the first year with the purchase of any new hosting plan.
5. Email Accounts
Hosting companies usually include some form of email hosting with your website hosting plan.
SiteGround and Bluehost both have great email hosting options with similar features.
SiteGround
SiteGround allows you to create unlimited professional emails from any domain you own and host with them.
You can also create email aliases, forwarders and set up autoresponders right from within the Cpanel.
If you have a preferred email client like Gmail or Apple Mail, you can set up your email on them.
Bluehost
Bluehost allows you to create professional emails with any of their hosting plans, BUT it’s only free for the 3-month trial.
After those 3 months, you’ll have to pay $2.49/month.
6. Server Locations
So far between SiteGround vs Bluehost, the features have been pretty similar.
Server locations are where the race starts to change significantly. You want your hosting company to have as many server locations as possible.
Why?
The server is where your website files are stored. Once someone visits your website they request the files from the server.
The closer the server is to the person visiting your website, the faster it will load. The more servers your hosting company has the quicker your website loads worldwide.
This means your visitors will have a good experience on your site (which both Google and visitors care about).

SiteGround has 11 main server locations globally.

There isn’t much information online and they don’t post much on their website. But with a bit of digging, it is suspected that they have 5 servers located in:

Nothing has been confirmed from Bluehost about exactly where their servers are located.

Both hosts make it super easy to set up a WordPress website on your new hosting plan.
Rather than just offering a generic WordPress Installer – SiteGround and Bluehost have their own native wizard tool.

SiteGround’s WordPress installer takes you through a simple setup form. You name your site, select the domain and set up your user login details.
Do you use WooCommerce as well?
SiteGround will help you set up your WordPress site then configure WooCommerce. This makes it easy to migrate your site over to SiteGround or set up a new website altogether.
You’ll also get a list of pre-installed recommended plugins which you can choose to keep or delete.
Bluehost
Bluehost has a very similar setup for installing a new WordPress site.
You will go through a 3 step user-friendly process to configure your website just the way you want.
All Bluehost websites come with a pre-installed Bluehost dashboard.
It is supposed to make managing your site easier by simplifying all of the settings.
This might help beginners, but it’s better to get used to the WordPress UI if you plan to use WordPress long-term.

This has pros and cons and highly depends on you as the website owner.
Ideally, you want the flexibility to choose whether updates are installed automatically or not.

Now we are getting into the nitty-gritty of performance.
This is where the gloves come off. Speed should be at the top of your list when choosing a hosting company. Check out the results.

Bluehost
Bluehost doesn’t publish much about their data centres.
From independent testing, it’s suspected that they have 5 data centres where their suspected 5 server locations are.
If it’s true, this would give them a pretty decent level of infrastructure to work with.
But the fact that they aren’t open about their data centres and the technology used to power them makes you feel a little more suspicious about the quality of their networks.

My own independent fastest WordPress hosting research also showed that SiteGround performed much better than Bluehost, especially when you have a lot of site visitors.
